SURVEY BOLIVIA JULI AUGUST 2008
Erik Jongejan and Fred Opdam will visit Bolivia in Juli/August to make a survey on conservation projects and possible co-operation with local organizations. Alfredo Olmedo will assist part of the visit.
Locations
1 Rurrenabaque area (La Paz and Beni Department)
2 a TCO Monteverde, b P.N. Noel Kempff Mercado, c Piso Fime (Santa Cruz Department)

1 Rurrenabaque area
In this area Amazon Fund is investigating the possibility of establishing an awareness centre for environmental issues like forest management, climate change, destruction of biodiversity and more. We want to combine this centre with a rehabilitation centre for wildlife. The attraction of this combination lies into the possibility of really meeting and understanding wildlife in their natural habitat.
Amazon Fund will also look into other projects like buying land, educational incentives and stimulating eco-tourism. Appointments with local guides (Marcial. M., Allen Perry) and decision makers of local communities (mayor of Gredal, CIPTA [counsel Tacana people]) are made or in progress.
2a TCO Monteverde
Here we will visit a possible location of a future visitor/interpretation centre at TCO Monteverde. This is a project of FCBC in co-operation with partners. We might become one too. The combination including a rehab centre for wildlife is optional. The TCO Monteverde area is still teeming with wildlife and is a very interesting area for nature lovers.
2b P.N. Noel Kempff Mercado The beautiful National Park Noel Kempff Mercado is very remote which helps its preservation. Only few people visit this Park. Although it is under UNESCO protection and some NGO’s are active in the area, hunting, poaching, (illegal) logging, bad forest management, lack of income for the communities, lack of funding for protection etc are real threats. Amazon Fund will do a survey in this area and look for solution. An eco-roundtrip though this area will be guided by Erik Jongejan in September/October 2009. For more information about this trip: erik@amazonfund.eu.
2c Piso Fime
Piso Firme is a buffer area for P.N.N.K.M. Amazon Fund will look into options of a combined awareness/rehab centre here too. And look for more solutions to preserve this unique area bordering Brazil, a country where devastation of forests is severe. From the air the border of Brazil and Bolivia is sometimes very visible. Soya plantations or production forests on one side, rainforest on the other. (It seems that Brazilian companies already invested in Bolivia and have concessions in several areas.)
Appointments with possible local partners FCBC (Hermes Justiniano / Stan Rosholt) and SIMBIOSIS -Mensch und Natur e.V. (Maribel Añez, F.J. Kerkhoff ) are made.
In September you can read about our conclusions and progress. We invite you to subscribe on our newsletter and keep updated.
This survey is financed out of private money.
