Potable water and sanitation in the Biosphere and Indigenous Territory Pilón Lajas, Bolivia.
The majority of the indigenous communities in the Biosphere and Indigenous Territory Pilón Lajas in the Bolivian Amazon do not have access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. Traditionally, the people in the area take their drinking water from small rivers, which in the past were crystal clean. But due to agricultural, mining and oil exploration activities in the upper parts of the streams just outside the limits of the biosphere, river-water is becoming polluted, loaded with sediments and unsafe for drinking. This is resulting in increased health problems. >> |

Environmental Awareness in the Bolivian Amazon through Education of School Children.
Urbanisation in the Amazon region is an active and continuous process and presently over 70% of the population in the region lives in urban centres. To a large extent, these populations are made up of descendants of migrants originating from outside the region. The knowledge and awareness of the migrant population to conserve the natural treasures of the Amazon are limited. Most of the urban population hardly has been in contact with the surrounding nature and awareness to conserve the environment is limited or misplaced. >> |
