Timber Certification Standards Questioned.

Consumers with an environmental and social conscience have only one recourse when they are planning to purchase wood or wood products. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and its logo on products provide assurance that wood and paper products come from forests that meet strict environmental and social standards. The organization Ecological Internet carried out a campaign that has led Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to request an accounting of the discovery of non-certifiable wood fiber in products with the FSC brand. In one case, fiber was included from ancient forest in Tasmania. In another case, wood fiber was used from timber derived from Grassy Narrows First Nation’s territory in Ontario, Canada. This indigenous nation had not granted permission for logging of its lands. In addition, the FSC has been alleged to obtain at least 60% of its timber from first time industrial logging of ancient forests. Without doubt, these issues must be immediately and candidly addressed by the FSC if the organization is to retain any credibility.
